For the Love of BC (and Everyone Who Left a Piece of Their Heart on the Heights)

By Liz Neighbors | Liz Neighbors Studios

There is something about Boston College that gets into your bones.

Maybe it's Gasson Hall. I mean….have you ever seen a more beautiful building? In the fall with the leaves turning all gold and red around it, it looks like something out of a dream. In winter with a dusting of snow, even better. Spring sunshine on those Gothic towers….forget it. Every season Gasson shows up and absolutely delivers. Every single time.

Or maybe it's just the feeling of being up on the Heights, looking out at the city, thinking….how did I get so lucky to go to school here?

I painted the Boston College print because Eagles are a special kind of loyal. BC people don't just go to college there….they carry it with them forever. You know exactly the person I'm talking about. They still get chills when they hear the fight song. They still talk about Doug Flutie's Hail Mary like they were standing in the end zone themselves. Honestly….same. That throw in 1984 is one of the greatest moments in college football history and every single BC alum owns a piece of it. I've met many a dog on the Falmouth bike path named Flutie as well...

Football Saturdays at Alumni Stadium….there is nothing quite like it. The tailgates, the energy, the gold helmets catching the light. The whole campus buzzing from the moment you woke up. Everyone in their maroon and gold, everyone with somewhere to be, everyone so genuinely happy to be there together. Heck, I'm not even a BC alum and it gets me excited!

And after the game? The night was just getting started!

The Mods. If you know, you know. Those little houses were the epicenter of so much fun, so many memories, so many stories that probably shouldn't be repeated in polite company. Lol. Brighton darties out on Gerald Road when the weather finally turned warm….everyone spilling outside like they'd been waiting all winter for exactly that moment. Because they had been. Boston winters are no joke and a sunny April Saturday on Foster felt like the greatest reward imaginable.

Baseball Tavern….RIP. Truly. A moment of silence for Baseball Tavern, which holds a very special place in the hearts of BC alumni everywhere. Gone but absolutely never forgotten.

And then there's Vandy Hall. And Lower. Oh, Lower dining….the opinions people have about Lower! Strong ones! Everyone remembers exactly what they ate, exactly who they sat with, exactly which table was theirs.  Rationing meal points to get you to the end of the semester. The chicken fingers. The pasta. The pizza at 11pm when you stumbled in after a long night and it tasted like the best thing you'd ever eaten. It really did taste like the best thing you'd ever eaten.Funny how that works….

The BC print and notecards started because Eagles wanted a way to keep it close. A little piece of the Heights on the wall. Something to send to a roommate across the country, a mom who still tears up at graduation photos, a new student heading off to Chestnut Hill for the first time. Every Septemeber Saturday has you yearning for a tailgate at the Mods before listening to the Screaming Eagles Marching Band play "For Boston" echoing through Alumni Stadium.

Every order comes with a story. A Class of '98 alum in California who cried a little opening the package. A grandfather who ordered notecards for his legacy granddaughter's acceptance. That's the part I love most, always….art connects people in the best way.

Whether you were a Mary Ann's regular or more of a Landsdowne street person….whether your Saturdays were all Alumni Stadium or mostly Gerald Road….whether you spent four years staring at Gasson and never once took it for granted (the right answer) or somehow got used to it (impossible, truly)….these BC prints are for you. I love Gasson in every season, the million dollar stairs, tailgates on Lower Campus in the fall and I hope you love them too

For every Eagle who still feels it when someone says "go BC."
